Grosse-Ile, Michigan

Our main reason for visiting Detroit was to spend time with our good friend Will.  Graham and Will met each other in 2006-7 when they were both studying at Edinburgh Uni.  In December 2007 Will was in our wedding and we have not managed to see each other since then.

Will grew up on an island south-east of Detroit called Grosse-Ile.  It straddles the border between Canada and the US and has an interesting history.  It is also very lovely, quiet and green.  It was a special treat to stay with Will and his parents because they are currently living in a massive house right on the waterfront.  The house that Will grew up in tragically burnt down last Christmas and with the housing market so bad, this house was available for cheap rent having sat empty and unsold for months and months.  Thus Will's parents are currently renting it while their house is being re-built by the insurance company.

We had lots of fun poking around the many rooms and figuring out the changes that have been made to the building since it was constructed in the 1920s.

On our last night in Michigan Will's dad also took us out on his speed boat to watch the sunset.

A lake that looks like an ocean.

There is nothing more peaceful to me then being near water at sunset.
