Georgetown + Mount Vernon + Alexandria

So this post is a throwback from our time in DC.  As you saw the DC Digs post and the Monuments post, DC is a very impressive city full of grand buildings and impressive structures.  We loved those but we also enjoyed visiting a few places that were quite different from those but in retrospect very similar to each other.

The first area like this was Georgetown.

Older than central DC, Georgetown is located on the outskirts of the city and is home to the university (of the same name) and all the rich kids that go to it.  As a result it has lots of shopping and good restaurants centred on lovely streets full of old houses.

We walked up to the main campus one evening.  Very impressive.

Another day we took a daytrip to Mount Vernon (the family home of George Washington) in Virginia.

Despite the oppressively hot weather we enjoyed touring through his house and outbuildings as well as the treat of another awesomely patriotic video and museum exhibition.

The final impressively old and interesting place that we visited outside DC was the small town of Alexandria.

Gas lamps aplenty.

Many of these buildings in these areas are older than large parts of Edinburgh, somehow that was so mind-boggling.
