The best thing about our trip to DC was the fact that we got to enjoy it with my family! My mum arranged the flights so that we all landed within 15 minutes of each other and met up in the airport. Not having seen each other for 11 months (the longest yet) we were all excited to see each other and somehow despite the time apart and funny location it immediately felt completely normal to be together again and we resumed our usual mocking of each other before the cab had even reached the hotel. I love my family!
We all stayed at the Washington Plaza Hotel using the conference discount rate. Graham and I have hardly stayed in any hotels on our travels so it was a real treat to have a nice bathroom (with bath!) and receive a newspaper to our door every morning. Not to mention a wonderful outdoor pool which we enjoyed every chance we got.
As I was in the conference for the first four days Graham, mum, dad and my sister Stephanie had lots of fun relaxing and visiting the National History Museum, the White House and the Washington Monument.
On the first evening I met up with the family and we walked down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol. It is the most prominent landmark (aside from the Washington Monument) on the DC skyline and one of the monuments we were all looking forward to seeing in person.
On the way we passed the Canadian embassy.
As we relaxed in front of the Capitol the sun started to set casting a yellow glow. Graham had lots of fun using his new 35mm lense to capture it.
We finished the evening with a delicious mexican meal, yum!
A few days later we returned to the Capitol for a tour. It was great, especially the super cheesy movie that they started the tour with.
The best part was visiting the rotunda, very impressive.

As we progressed down the street the Capitol loomed larger...
Finally we reached the reflecting pool where we could appreciate the building in all it's glory.
